Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran recently met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to discuss expanding the Tata Group’s presence in the state, including workforce growth, the proposed AI City, and multi-sector investments. During the discussions, the Tata Group and the Uttar Pradesh government explored a plan to substantially increase Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) workforce in the state, with employee strength at its Lucknow and Noida facilities likely to rise from around 16,000 to nearly 30,000, according to official records and government confirmations of media reports.
The proposal was discussed during a courtesy meeting in Lucknow between Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, according to information shared by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
While details on timelines or approvals remain unclear, reports indicated that the expansion could significantly boost the state’s digital workforce and reinforce Uttar Pradesh’s emergence as an IT and services hub outside the National Capital Region.
Beyond workforce-related proposals, the meeting revisited a broader collaboration roadmap between the Tata Group and the Uttar Pradesh government across sectors, including artificial intelligence (AI), information technology, electronics, defence manufacturing, skill development, and the digital ecosystem, according to the chief minister’s official social media handle.
Among the ideas discussed was a proposal to develop an ‘AI City’ in Lucknow, envisioned as a hub for AI-driven innovation, research, and enterprise adoption.
Collaboration
The latest round of discussions builds on sustained engagement between the two sides over the past year.
In 2024, the Uttar Pradesh government and TCS signed a memorandum of understanding through the state’s labour and employment department aimed at enhancing youth employability.
At the time, the Tata Group had expressed its intent to actively participate in Uttar Pradesh’s industrial development and employment generation efforts, while the state government reiterated its commitment to policy stability, transparent systems, and a business-friendly environment to attract large investments, according to a statement issued last year.
Under the agreement, TCS committed to supporting interview preparation, résumé building, data creation, team management, and personality development training, along with awareness programmes in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital skills.
The initiative aimed to make registered job seekers job-ready and connect them with employment opportunities across thousands of companies, rather than limiting placements to direct hiring by TCS alone.
