Digital payments giant PhonePe has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to integrate the popular generative AI model, ChatGPT, into its platform.
With this integration, AI-powered assistance will now be accessible to millions of Indian users across PhonePe’s entire ecosystem — including the PhonePe app, PhonePe for Business, and the Indus Appstore.
The announcement follows a little over a month after Walmart-owned PhonePe submitted draft papers for its Initial Public Offering (IPO) through the confidential pre-filing route, according to an earlier report by Mint.
How PhonePe’s ChatGPT Integration Will Function
The partnership aims to broaden the adoption of generative AI across India’s digital landscape. By embedding ChatGPT directly into the PhonePe ecosystem, users nationwide will gain access to AI-driven assistance for a wide range of everyday tasks, making interactions faster, smarter, and more intuitive.
The feature will support tasks such as travel planning, shopping, and general information discovery, enhancing the overall user experience by delivering “smarter and more relevant” assistance, the company said in its official press release.
Boosting AI Adoption Across India
This collaboration represents one of the earliest large-scale integrations of ChatGPT into a major Indian consumer platform, marking a significant step toward accelerating AI adoption nationwide. It also paves the way for new use cases as AI-powered tools continue to gain momentum among digital users.
Commenting on the launch, Rahul Chari, Founder, Whole-time Director, and Chief Technology Officer at PhonePe, said, “At PhonePe, we have spent years building the foundational layers for digital services at population scale. This strategic alliance shows how collaborations between innovative companies can bring cutting-edge technology to a wider audience. We are excited to partner with OpenAI as we begin this new journey.
Oliver Jay, Head of International at OpenAI, echoed Chari’s views, saying, “Our collaboration with PhonePe marks a major step in our mission to make AI more accessible across India. As a global hub for innovation, India offers immense potential, and PhonePe’s deep understanding of the country and its users makes them an ideal partner. Together, we aim to showcase the transformative value of consumer AI and help millions of people enhance their everyday lives.
PhonePe IPO: Key Details
According to a Mint report, PhonePe is expected to raise ₹11,000–₹12,000 crore primarily through an offer for sale. The IPO will include a combination of an offer for sale and a fresh issue, with the fresh issue making up only a small part of the total offering.
The company had been gearing up for a public listing for several months before submitting its draft papers. Earlier this year, in February, PhonePe appointed JP Morgan, Citi India, Morgan Stanley, and Kotak Mahindra Capital as merchant bankers to manage the IPO process. By April, it had transitioned from a private entity to a public company, moving one step closer to its market debut.
However, the company also clarified that “the filing of the PDRHP does not necessarily mean that the company will proceed with the IPO,” according to the Mint report.
