OpenAI said that image generation with the new model is up to four times faster than its previous version. On December 16, the company announced the rollout of an updated ChatGPT Images feature, powered by its latest image generation model, GPT-Image-1.5. OpenAI added that the model is now available to all ChatGPT users as well as developers via its API.

The company said the upgraded model offers faster image generation, better instruction adherence and more consistent image edits, while maintaining key details such as lighting, composition and facial features across multiple edits.

OpenAI said the new model delivers image-generation speeds up to four times faster than the previous version.

The move comes after Google introduced Nano Banana Pro, an image generation and editing model powered by Gemini 3 Pro. The model enables users to create visuals from ideas, prototypes, notes and real-time data, while also drawing on Google Search’s extensive knowledge base.

“The new Images model is launching today in ChatGPT for all users and is accessible via the API as GPT-Image-1.5,” the company said. It added that the updated Images experience will be available to most ChatGPT users starting today, while Business and Enterprise access will be introduced at a later stage.

OpenAI stated that the model can handle a variety of image edits, including adding, removing, and blending elements, along with creative transformations like style changes and layout adjustments. The company noted that it performs better than GPT-Image 1.0 in rendering dense text and following detailed instructions.

OpenAI has also added a dedicated Images section in ChatGPT, enabling users to browse preset styles and prompts and manage all image creation in one location. The company noted that users can keep generating new images even while previous ones are still processing.

OpenAI stated that in the API, GPT-Image-1.5 provides better consistency in maintaining branded visuals and logos across edits. The company also noted that both image inputs and outputs are priced roughly 20% lower than with the previous image model.

OpenAI stated that the previous version of ChatGPT Images will still be accessible as a custom GPT, and added that additional enhancements are planned for future updates.
